“So, come on and let me know…
Should I stay or should I go?”
~ The Clash

There are really only 3 questions you need to answer to know whether your current job is right for you:

1) Am I getting the chance to do what I do best?

2) Am I making the difference I want to make?

PURPOSE

3) Am I growing to become more of who I want to be?

OPPORTUNITY

Put a future tense on those questions, and they’ll help you assess your confidence that your career is leading somewhere you WANT to be:

1) Will I get chance to do what I do best?

2) Will I make the difference I want to make?

3) Will I grow to become more of who I want to be?

You can rate them on any scale you choose – High/Medium/Low, 1-5, 1-10, 0-100 – but I prefer brutal honesty

(and, frankly, when anxiety about your job, progress and career keeps you awake at night, it’s the ONLY approach that works)

so Yes/No/Not Enough is my preferred ranking system with my clients.

  • Yes – nothing to do right now, but plan for future challenges

  • No – radical shift needed, maybe even an escape hatch

  • Not Enough – Tweaks in Plan A, Plan B in pocket

Knowing that this is LinkedIn, and just as prone to the social perfection myth as any other network, I’m not going to ask you to comment with your answers

(“Things are going great, Vince!”)

But I will encourage you to ask yourself the questions and listen to your honest, brutal answers.

You owe it to yourself.

When you’re ready, I’m here.
