Well now, that’s a curious thought.
Is freedom defined by the chains
(i.e. freedom FROM)
or by what is released
(i.e. freedom TO)
And, of course, it’s both, but when freedom is defined simply by escaping the chains, doesn’t it always need to keep the chains around?
As an artist, we live with a constant sense of “when I… insert condition here… I will… insert the imagined artistic output here…”
(said differently, the great human statement of learned helplessness, “I would… if only…”)
Now, given the society we live in, and the how the game is so seriously stacked against each of us, it’s fair to say that the chains aren’t going anywhere soon. Which leaves us with a choice.
Give up, or find the freedom TO while working towards freedom FROM.
