Thought for today: Your VALUES are not the same as your NEEDS.
For example, you may value Team-work, but have a high need for Significance. And, if that is the case, you will likely experience intra- and inter-personal conflict from being driven to dominate in team-based working.
Similarly, if you have a high need for Certainty, you may find it very hard to square with placing a value of Innovation. As a result, your underlying decisions and behaviors (driven by your need) may completely sabotage your expressed intent (to innovate).
So, which are more important – values or needs?
Well, it’s pretty hard to change your needs, whereas your values are more fluid.
A better question is all about balance: “How do I shape my focus, decisions and actions necessary to live my values, so that my needs are consistently met at a high level?”
In the examples above: How will I be the team member who everyone wants involved because I make sure my team-mates flourish and do their best work? How will I create the environment that offers the highest probability of successful innovation for growth?
But before we even get to the how, what do you value AND what do you need?
